Aerial Inspection

Structure inspection without the access barriers.

Aerial inspection uses professional UAV platforms to capture close-range, high-resolution imagery of structural surfaces, facades, roofs and elevated infrastructure. The result is a systematic visual record of the entire asset — captured safely from the air.

All inspection flights are conducted to a documented methodology with systematic overlap coverage, ensuring complete surface area is captured. Imagery is geotagged, stitched into orthomosaic condition maps and annotated with defect classifications directly referenced to the structure.

Aerial inspection is particularly effective for structures where access is costly, hazardous or disruptive — including operational bridges, tall structures, nuclear facilities and coastal assets exposed to the elements.

Capabilities

What we deliver.

Engineering-quality inspection data without the access, cost and disruption of traditional methods.

High-Resolution Visual Survey

Close-range inspection imagery at sub-5mm GSD. Captures surface cracking, spalling, corrosion, impact damage and joint deterioration at detail previously requiring rope access.

Defect Mapping & Classification

Defects identified, classified and georeferenced to the asset model. Condition reports include annotated images, defect dimensions and severity ratings to engineering standards.

Thermal Inspection

Thermographic UAV survey for moisture ingress detection, delamination identification and thermal bridging analysis on structures and buildings.

Structural Condition Reports

Engineering-format inspection reports with geolocated defect inventory, photographic evidence and maintenance recommendations. Suitable for structural health monitoring programmes.

Post-Event Inspection

Rapid post-incident inspection to assess structural damage following flood, impact, seismic event or extreme weather. Safe, rapid deployment with same-day reporting capability.

Monitoring & Repeat Survey

Systematic repeat inspection at defined intervals with comparison to baseline. Supports planned maintenance cycles and condition-based asset management programmes.

Our Process

How we work.

A safe, structured inspection workflow from planning to condition report issue.

01

Inspection Planning

Flight methodology designed to achieve required coverage and resolution. Risk assessment and method statement prepared. Airspace, NOTAMs and site access confirmed.

02

Systematic Capture

Structured inspection flight with systematic image acquisition. Critical areas captured at multiple angles and resolutions. Field QA confirms full coverage before departure.

03

Processing & Analysis

Image mosaic construction, defect identification and classification. Defects georeferenced and catalogued with dimensional data and photographic evidence.

04

Inspection Report

Structured condition report with annotated imagery, defect log, severity assessment and maintenance recommendations. Delivered in PDF and GIS formats to specification.

FAQ

Aerial inspection questions.

Angell Surveys is a RICS-regulated practice (Firm 681790). CAA-authorised UAV operations. RAMS, insurance and operator training records supplied at proposal stage.

What is an aerial drone inspection?
An aerial drone inspection uses an unmanned aircraft to capture high-resolution visual and (optionally) radiometric thermal imagery of a structure, building, bridge, tower or piece of infrastructure. The output is a condition report with georeferenced images, anomaly classification, severity rating and recommended remediation. Inspections are conducted without scaffold, rope access or man-lift, dramatically reducing CDM risk and the cost of asset access.
What assets do you inspect?
Bridges (highway, rail and pedestrian), viaducts, retaining walls, facades, chimneys, telecoms masts, wind turbines, transmission towers, dam faces, lock gates, water towers, solar PV arrays, industrial plant exteriors and high-level roofing. Combined with our confined-space remote inspection capability we also cover internal voids, tanks, vessels and sewers without manned entry.
What defects can a drone inspection detect?
Visual defects include cracking, spalling, corrosion, coating breakdown, water ingress, vegetation, displacement, joint failure, fixing failure and impact damage. With radiometric thermal capture we additionally detect heat-loss patterns, water trapped in roof membranes, electrical hot-spots, blocked plant ductwork and refractory wear. Defects are georeferenced to the structure, classified by severity, and matched to the asset owner's condition grading scheme.
What flight authorisations do you hold and what about Network Rail / HE possessions?
UAV operations are flown under the appropriate CAA authorisations including Operational Authorisations for non-standard work where required. Operations on Network Rail possessions, Highways England restricted areas, water and energy operator sites, nuclear-licensed facilities and HSE-regulated industrial sites are routine. Full RAMS, public liability insurance and operator training records are supplied at proposal stage.
What deliverables will I receive?
A written inspection report with executive summary, georeferenced visual and thermal imagery, anomaly inventory tagged to the structure, severity classification, recommended remediation pathway, and PDF map sheets. For long routes a video flythrough is supplied. Optional 3D photogrammetric model of the inspected structure for measurement, defect localisation and stakeholder review.
Are you RICS regulated?
Yes. Angell Surveys is regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) — verify our registration at ricsfirms.com/office/681790/Angell-Surveys-Ltd. All inspection work follows the RICS Surveys of Land, Buildings and Utilities professional statement.
